As per government regulations, all PAN card holders were required to link their Aadhaar with their PAN by 30th June 2023. This mandate applies to all taxpayers to ensure compliance with tax laws.
If the PAN-Aadhaar linking was not completed by the given deadline, the PAN card became inoperative from 1st July 2023. However, individuals who failed to link their PAN with Aadhaar can still do so by paying a penalty of ₹1,000. Upon successful linking, the PAN card will be reactivated.
Steps to Link Your PAN with Aadhaar After the Deadline
If your PAN is inactive due to non-linking, follow these two main steps:
- Pay the penalty fee.
- Submit the Aadhaar-PAN link request.

Step 1: Pay the Penalty for Late PAN-Aadhaar Linking
To pay the penalty, follow these steps:
- Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
- Click on ‘e-Pay Tax’ under ‘Quick Links’.
- Enter your PAN number, confirm it, and provide your registered mobile number. Click ‘Continue’.
- Verify OTP, then proceed to the e-Pay Tax page. Click ‘Continue’.
- Select ‘Income Tax’, then click ‘Proceed’.
- Choose Assessment Year ‘2025-26’, and under ‘Type of Payment’, select ‘Other Receipts (500)’ as the sub-type. Click ‘Continue’.
- Pay ₹1,000, which will be auto-filled under the ‘Others’ section.
You can pay through net banking, debit card, NEFT/RTGS, or the payment gateway. The payment gateway is available for account holders of the following banks:

Step 2: Submit Your Aadhaar-PAN Link Request
Once the penalty is paid, proceed with linking PAN and Aadhaar using one of the following methods:
Method 1: Without Logging in to the Portal
- Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
- Click ‘Link Aadhaar’ under ‘Quick Links’.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, then click ‘Validate’.
- Enter your name as per Aadhaar and mobile number, then click ‘Link Aadhaar’.
- Enter the OTP received on your mobile, then click ‘Validate’.
- Your request will be sent to UIDAI for verification.
Method 2: Logging in to the Portal
- Register/Login on the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
- Enter your user ID (PAN) and password. Click ‘Continue’.
- Go to ‘My Profile’, then select ‘Link Aadhaar’ under ‘Personal Details’.
- Enter your Aadhaar number, then click ‘Validate’.
- A confirmation message will appear, stating that the Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN.
How to Check PAN-Aadhaar Linking Status?
To verify if your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN:
- Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
- Click on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ under Quick Links.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, then click ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.
If your PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, you will receive a notification stating the same. In such a case, follow the above steps to complete the linking process.
