Situations Where IEC Is Required
When an importer needs to clear goods through customs, the customs authorities require the IEC.
When an importer is transferring funds abroad via a bank, the bank demands the IEC.
When an exporter is shipping goods overseas, customs at the port require the IEC.
When an exporter receives foreign currency payments directly into a bank account, the bank mandates the IEC.
Steps Involved in IEC (Import Export Code) Registration
Visit the official DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) website.
Click on the ‘Services’ tab from the homepage menu.
Select ‘IEC Profile Management’ from the drop-down.
On the new page, click ‘Apply for IEC’.
Click ‘Register’ and fill in the required details, then click ‘Send OTP’.
Enter the OTP received and click ‘Register’ to proceed.
Upon OTP validation, a temporary password will be sent, which can be changed after logging in.
Log in using the registered credentials.
Click ‘Apply for IEC’ from the dashboard.
Select ‘Start Fresh Application’.
Fill in general and business details, including proprietor/partner/director info, bank details, attach the Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), and proceed with payment.
After successful payment, the application redirects to DGFT. A receipt will be generated—download and save it.
The IEC certificate will be sent via email and can also be downloaded by selecting ‘Print IEC’ under the ‘IEC Profile Management’ section after logging in.
Documents Required for IEC Registration
Copy of PAN Card (individual, firm, or company)
Identity proof of proprietor (Voter ID, Aadhaar Card, or Passport)
Proof of establishment or incorporation (firm, company, HUF, society, etc.)
Proof of business address (sale deed, lease agreement, rent agreement, or utility bills)
Cancelled cheque of the current bank account (individual or entity)
Self-addressed envelope for postal delivery of the IEC certificate

Cases Where Import-Export Code (IEC) Is Not Mandatory
As per the latest government circular, obtaining an IEC is not mandatory for all GST-registered traders. In such scenarios, the trader’s Permanent Account Number (PAN) will be treated as their IEC for carrying out import and export activities.
IEC is also not required in the following cases:
When goods are imported or exported purely for personal use and not intended for any commercial purpose.
If the Government of India Departments and Ministries are conducting the import/export.
When the transaction is carried out by notified charitable institutions, as exempted by the relevant authority.
