IMPORT EXPORT CODE (IEC) REGISTRATION SERVICES
IEC (Import Export Code) – How to Apply for It, Benefits
In today’s fiercely competitive world, every entrepreneur aims to expand their business beyond domestic boundaries. Thanks to the internet and modern technology, operating on a global scale has become much simpler. Still, before entering international markets, you must complete specific formalities, comply with legal requirements, and obtain the necessary registrations and licenses. One essential requirement is the IEC (Import Export Code), which is mandatory for anyone importing into or exporting from India. This license is also referred to as the Importer-Exporter Code.
The IEC is a ten-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and remains valid for a lifetime. Anyone planning to start an import or export business in India needs this code. Without it, importers cannot bring goods into the country, and exporters are unable to claim benefits or incentives offered under DGFT export schemes.

Advantages of IEC Registration
1. Business Expansion
An IEC allows you to take your products or services beyond national boundaries, helping you reach international markets and scale your business globally.
2. Access to Various Benefits
Companies holding a valid IEC can claim numerous incentives and advantages offered by the DGFT, Export Promotion Councils, Customs, and other authorities for import and export activities.
3. No Return Filing
Once the IEC is issued, there is no obligation to file periodic returns or maintain ongoing compliance with the DGFT. Even export transactions do not require separate return submissions.
4. Simple Application Process
Obtaining an IEC is straightforward and typically takes about 10–15 days after applying to the DGFT. You don’t need to show evidence of past import or export activity to receive the code.
5. Lifetime Validity
The IEC is issued once and remains valid for the lifetime of the business. No renewals or additional filings are required, making it a permanent authorization for all future import and export dealings.
Situations Where an Import-Export Code (IEC) Is Not Required
GST-Registered Traders:
Under the government’s latest circular, businesses registered under GST are not required to obtain a separate IEC. In these cases, the trader’s PAN number functions as the IEC for all import and export activities.Personal Use Shipments:
If goods are imported or exported strictly for personal use and have no commercial intent, an IEC is unnecessary.Government Departments and Certain Charitable Institutions:
Imports or exports carried out by Government of India departments, ministries, or notified charitable organizations are exempt from the requirement to obtain an IEC.
